'Grapes of Wrath II: the Great Recession' is a realist novel interspersed with Recession Times News articles from actual news media. Set during the Great Recession, it centers on homeless and near-homeless people, driven from their suburban Seattle homes by unemployment, bank foreclosures, and lack of affordable housing. Determined to escape a life of isolation and fear that immobilizes the ninety-nine-percent, the group strives to create a home and a future for their children. The four main characters are initially unrelated and each suffers the havoc that “capitalism gone wild” wreaks upon them. They form a bond as a multi-generational, extended family, and survive by combining their resources and exploring their options in the face of one hardship after another. Together, they convert a recession-struck neighborhood into a farm community oasis. Sam, 51, is an unemployed engineer and a homeless loner. Julie, 45, was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and now is a bag lady. Beth, 33, is a single mom and nurse who can’t afford an apartment. Bruce, 28, is under-employed and an Occupy activist.
